Customer Reviews

After having a baby with reflux, two cats, a husband, and ME using tan microsuede couches for almost 4 yrs, I was about to pay to have them professionally cleaned. When I looked into the cost of that, I then started looking for upholstery cleaning machines. With microsuede, if you dont remove all of the water, a horrible watermark is left and these compound over time and make the appearance of the fabric look awful. I knew that whatever I purchased was going to have to be able to remove the cleaning fluid AND clean really well.
This product not only meets my standards, but exceeds them! Worked like a charm and will save us tons of money in the future since we have a new baby coming in 6 wks!
FYI, included with the machine is an 8oz bottle of the cleaner (Advanced Stain). I bought a 32oz bottle along with the bissell because I wasn't sure how much I was going to need per cleaning (only a few ozs!) and wasn't sure if any came with the machine. The 8 oz. bottle will last me a good amount of time! Just thought I would mention that!
The machine is a little loud (wasn't sure of what to expect- sounds like a vacuum). But, it's worth every penny!

After reading reviews on Amazon, I sent my grandson to buy locally the Bissell SpotBot Pet Carpet Cleaner. He had not seen what I wanted, and brought this home by mistake. It is the best spot carpet cleaner we could want. The power brush works well, and the vacuum extracts the filth and water, so the restored carpet dries quickly. My house is a severe test, since we have multiple pets, and the less said the better. We have used other carpet-cleaning products with this, besides the little bottle included, and they work well, and the machine has not clogged.

Customer Reviews

Well our 2 older cats (Lucy ; Ethel) don't get sick often at all. For that I am grateful since I (the husband) am retired, and stuck to face whatever disaster comes while the wife is at work. But I am squeamish when it even comes to scooping their "you know what" when it is time and actually wear a gas mask if forced to do that job. I may be a USMC Combat Veteran, but I draw the line at liter boxes ; Diapers! I may be brave, but I AIN'T no HERO!
My wife just bought an upright steam cleaner from Eureka since all our carpet is now about 20 years old. It was expensive carpet and we have no kids so it has worn extremely well but is still getting tired. And since I retired I keep getting into trouble for bringing in grease or oil stains after working on our motorcycles or motor scooters. No matter what I do, I am always getting into trouble one way or the other. It's kind of like I am a 62 year old Dennis The Menace according to the wife? Well her big ; expensive steam cleaner is more trouble than I will EVER go to to use and when she is done with it we sometimes have a "fair" measure of success, most often not and it even seems to expand whatever the stain by spreading it around. NOT good and once that happens, nothing we try helps.
For the record, we used to just use Resolve or other similar cleaning chemicals ; do the best we could by hand. At least this way we never, EVER made the stains worse. When I saw this to try on the Amazon Vine Program I knew it would just be another gadget that would stink, leak and aggravate me more than the LAST gimmick I tried....Before I get into my trial of this machine, here are a couple things you may or may not already know. It has 5 different buttons.
- 1 for Fresh Surface Stains.
- 1 for Set IN OLDER Stains.
- 1 for Pause ; Resume
- 1 for Hose Attachment
- 1 for "STOP"
You choose whichever chemical you desire and add water also. Press the button for whatever type stain you have after placing the cleaner over your stain. The computer on-board will do the rest! 2 different brushes move in a weird way I can only describe as a motion similar to the motion of a car motor with a rotary engine. It's actually kind of hypnotic to watch but I was afraid to just LEAVE IT since the wife's steam cleaner can cause so much damage...I also have to admit this is designed for smaller "spot" type stains, NOT cleaning an entire carpet so just understand while it may work well for your different type stains, NOT just pet stains, it is for localized areas, not large sections of carpet. I also have to admit that since I don't have any pet stains but had 8 grease stains, that is what I tried this on. And it was so simple I didn't wait for my wife to get home and tell me I am "doing it wrong!) as usual either. I had 6 of the stains that were very OLD stains. I mean over 10 years old. The other 2 fresher (maybe a month old) from the latest motorcycle servicing....
This little unit actually worked. I mean it got out ALL of the stains, all 8. I have no idea how? More important, how it does so much better than a high priced steam cleaner. Maybe it it the chemicals used (provided with this unit)? Maybe the design of the brushes, or probably the combination? I don't know, I don't care. I used the "tough stain' setting which took 6 minutes to cycle through. (Easier "surface stains" only require a 3 minute cycle to clean.) I also used the hand manual cleaner to soak up some more of the wetness left after it finished. How can I NOT give this 5 stars? I never ever do until I have owned it over a year to verify it's durability. But this surpassed our other efforts by SO much I am beginning with a full 5 stars this time. If anything changes, I always update and will do so again with this ; lower my rating if needed. But given the amazing job this did on such a wide variety of stains (old ; new alike), I doubt this 5 stars will ever get downgraded? Short of blowing up, or leaking ; stinking like all before it, it will deserve every bit of my 5 star rating.
A couple of thing maybe worth adding?
-It has a 7 Inch brush area
-Has a NICE 16 foot cord!
-Tank holds 32 ounces
-LOVE that it has a carry handle
-Includes BOTH the Oxy Gen 2 cleaner (16 ounces) AND 2X Ultra Pet Stain ; Oder Chemical (8 ounces) TRIAL sizes however!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
1st Update:
-Oh SHOCK! My wife is home and pointed out 2 more stains I missed. She says I "never see them, never will" whatever that means? Worked again on both and these are about 4-6 weeks old per my mean old wife....And I need to also point out a very important item. Even on these stains we could never get out using ANYTHING we ever tried? ALL we used was the single chemical provided called "2X Pet Stain"! Now I did set the computer at the full "SET IN OLDER STAINS" Program but never even added any of the so called Oxy Gen 2 cleaner they ask you to use for that setting. Never even needed it. This machine just keeps surprising me to no end. The cats sneak up on it to attack when it goes into it's quiet mode. But when that mode changes and the vacuum parts comes on? They are 2 20 pounds (EACH) old lady cats on a new quest to break the sound barrier in their retreat! Fun for the whole family.....
UPDATE Much later on December 17 2011: OK, still working like a charm. I just spilled 4 beers I had just opened and not yet touched (Please, just don't even ASK!) and knocked them all over when moving a pile of Amazon deliveries that just arrived. Spilled full 48 ounces of beer on an expensive carpet under the bar table (pub table actually). Thank God my 2 cats Lucy ; Ethel LOVE beer.... They both came running from their afternoon coma's and dove in to help. I guess they just don't know if there will be a new treat of new disaster to enjoy when I scramble to save myself. So I dig this thing out and here we are, so much later and it still works 100% as well as always. Just need to tell you this little jewel is STILL as reliable at cleaning up as I am at making a mess. If you don't hear from me till next year it's probably ciz the old woman locked me in the garage again......

I was very happy to recieve the Bissel Spotbot cleaner as I've had some extremely stubborn organic BUT not pet-based stains in my carpet.
(Though I'm glad I do have it for when we do get a dog in the near future.)
The stairs and the area around our TV are the most difficult areas to keep up with spot cleaning due to foot traffic, frequency food and drink spills, and awkwardness of reaching many of the stains.
I normally use an Earth-friendly spot spray that generaaly does a good job if I get to the stain quick enough, but as I said I have some very stubborn areas.
The day the Spotbot arrived, I immediately set it to work on an area on the stairs.
NOTE: read ALL of the instructions before starting AND make sure the cap on the HOT water tank is secured properly before putting the tank in place or you'll have a spillout like I did.
The Spotbot is super easy to use, but not brainless.
Back to the stairs...
I considered using the hands-free option, but given the location of the spots I couldn't. The manual option worked very well, though.
So well in fact, I got moving around to every annoying stain area that came to mind (including stuff that was here when we moved in 5 years ago) and the Spot Bot dealt with it all.
I have to add that I think it's rather user friendly if you use it mindfully while you have a baby crawling around. And though I think the solutions are pet and kid fiendly as they say, I woyldn't use this in an area where baby will soon play.
Overall I was EXTREMELY pleased with my experience (except for how darn noisy the thing is...like ten times more than my hair dryer). So much so that when some red wine was spilled on our cream carpet over the weekend I didn't spring up to deal with.
"Meh," I told my husband. "I'll Spotbot it tomorrow."

Hoover SteamVac Pet Complete Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge - F5918900

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
This powerful home steam vacuum saves you the expense and hassle of having to rent a steam cleaner and keeps rugs, upholstery, and bare floors (other than hardwoods) looking like new. The powerful 12-amp motor combined with five spinning brushes that operate at either high or low speed lift the usual dirt and grime out of carpets. By pulling on the trigger in the comfortable upright handle, the deep cleaner releases the included carpet/upholstery cleaner and hot tap water. For more stubborn stains or for high-traffic areas, the SteamVac also has a Clean Surge feature, which sends an extra blast of cleaning solution into the stain by simply pressing a button on the handle. When cleaning is complete, release the trigger and the SteamVac forces hot air into the cleaning path so you can do a few dry strokes over the stain. The deep cleaner has two water tanks to keep clean water separate from dirty water. The top tank holds the detergent and 1 gallon of hot water and automatically mixes the two so you don't need to get your hands wet. The lower tank holds the dirty solution picked up from the carpet and unlatches to easily pour out into a sink without spilling. For cleaning stairs or upholstery, the deep cleaner offers a long 8-foot hose and a special stair/upholstery nozzle that scrubs out spots. Other details include a brush indicator, which informs you that the brushes are spinning; an on/off foot pedal; a handle-release pedal; and a 24-inch wrap-around cord. A pet clean-up kit for carpet and upholstery comes included, containing 16 ounces of Premium Pet detergent and a pack of cleaning wipes designed for pet stains and odors. The steam vacuum measures 20 by 11-1/4 by 44 inches and carries a one-year warranty.
This SteamVac is made to deep clean homes with pets. SpinScrub technology allows the brushes to clean carpet fibers from all sides, ensuring a more complete clean-up of pet messes. Comes with heated cleaning, removable rotating brushes for easy cleaning, fingertip surge control for spot removal, and two separate tanks to keep clean solution separate from dirty water. Also comes with a spinScrub powered hand tool as well as Pet formula detergent and a pack of quick clean-up pet wipes.

Product Features

  • SpinScrub multiple rotating brush system
  • Heated cleaning that is applied directly to the floor
  • Fingertip Clean Surge function for spot removal and heavy traffic
  • Two separate translucent tanks to keep clean solution separate from dirty water
  • SpinScrub powered hand tool for cleaning stairs and upholstery

Customer Reviews

How do I love my Hoover SteamVac? Let me count the ways... This carpet cleaning machine is FANTASTIC. As soon as I got the SteamVac, I cleaned some incredibly filthy areas on beige carpet. One was a major stain in a high traffic area that someone trampled into the carpet, while bringing groceries in with wet and dirty shoes. The other was an old stain my daughter made from a spilled chocolate-soymilk smoothie that she didn't clean up properly because she was in a rush to go somewhere. The SteamVac cleaned both of these problem spots to such a respectable level that I won't be embarrased in front of company anymore. This is an older carpet, so it doesn't look brand new. But, that doesn't stop me from jumping for joy.
Incidentally, I don't use the expensive, petroleum-chemical-based carpet cleaning solutions. Instead, I use water and a little bit of the nontoxic 'Lemon' SimpleGreen in the solution tank. I also worked on problem spots with a toothbrush and a squirt bottle with a VERY diluted solution of dishsoap and water. Then, to eliminate soap residue, a final rinse over the whole shebang with a solution of plain vinegar and water. TIP: If you want to experiment with carpet-cleaning solutions yourself, just be sure you pick LOW-SUDSING products.
And, nobody beats AMAZON on price. Can I just say FREE SHIPPING? Incredible!

So I discovered that this is pretty much the exact same model as the more famous Hoover F5914-900 SteamVac with Clean Surge
It has the clean surge as well, which does great with pet urine.
I think the only difference is that it's packaged with a small bottle of the cleaner for Pets and some wipes. As far as I can tell.
I've been using it almost every weekend. I get down and smell the spots afterwards and only a few times did I still smell it. I used the clean surge and it did the trick.
We also live where there's new home construction and I suspect we have a lot of 'construction dust' in our house. Apparently we do and for new carpet it's amazing how brown the water is! It picks up sand that I didn't know was there.
Still fairly new so we'll see how it ages, but so far so good. I bought a few extra gadgets for it online at [...] and they came fast. Even though I vacuum first, I still get dog hair caught up in the intake bit and the little removal tool only gets so much. I hope that I can keep it hair-free enough to make sure it doesn't become a problem. The fact that you can remove the brushes is great though, so you can wash them well.

Amazon.com Review
Everyone has their own system when it comes to mopping up a spilled mug of hot chocolate on the impractical, but beautiful ecru carpeting. Maybe they begin by dispensing half a roll of paper towels to absorb the excess liquid, then apply the carpet cleaner of choice, dab ferociously, and so on. Problem solved perhaps, but often the manual scrubbing actually pushes filth deeper into the carpet, further embedding it. Even if the chocolate color has been eradicated, the unpleasant aroma of spoiled milk may still arise. To fully eliminate stains, Bissell created their clever SpotLifter 2X carpet cleaner. The 9.6v cleaner uses a combination of aggressive brush agitation and powerful suction to actually lift spots up and out of the carpet. Ideal for attacking fresh spills or unsightly pet accidents, the handheld vacuum leaves the carpet looking as if Coco never left her owners a stinky present there.
To use the SpotLifter 2X, users fill the cleaner's back tank with cleaning formula and clean water. After spraying the soiled area, apply the deluxe brush to the area and switch the power button on. The brush begins to scrub at the carpet while the suction lifts debris and dirty water up into the front collection tank. The cleaner covers a 7-inch path. After the carpet has been thoroughly cleaned, a release button enables easy collection tank removal for disposal and a quick rinse out. The SpotLifter 2X is a cordless cleaning tool for convenient transportation. The batteries must be charged for 24 hours before the cleaner's first use. After use, the cleaner will best operate after fully recharging over 12 hours. The cleaner runs at full power for approximately 15 minutes per use. This item is covered by a one-year limited warranty. The cleaner measures 17-3/4 by 7 by 10 inches and weighs 6 pounds. --Jessica Reuling
The Bissell SpotLifter 2X handheld deep cleaner is the easiest way to clean spots and spills when they happen. It is cordless, rechargeable, and stores ready to use so it's ready to quickly clean up spots and spills. With powerful spray and suction the SpotLifter 2X lifts and removes tough spots and stains when they happen. It is great for pet stains because it sprays, lifts and removes tough pet stain and eliminates pet odors. With a seven inch cleaning path, this machine runs for an average of 14-15 minutes before needing to be recharged. This machine also comes with a trial size of compact formula.

Product Features

  • Hand-held deep carpet cleaner for emergency spills and stains from Bissell
  • Cleaner brush agitates soiled spots while simultaneously sucking debris up and through the 7-inch nozzle; adept at odor-removal
  • Cordless, the 9.6v cleaner runs at full power for 15 minutes; charge for 24 hours before first use and 12 hours following subsequent uses
  • With a dual tank system, users easily fill one with clean water and solution while dirty water collects in the other for appropriate disposal
  • Cleaner measures 17-3/4 by 7 by 10 inches and weighs 6 pounds; limited 1-year warranty

Customer Reviews

I bought the Bissell SpotLifter 2X to replace an older Bissell model that finally wore out after 5 years. We have 3 indoor cats that frequently soil our rugs and carpeting, so a quick and easy carpet cleaner is a must. The old version worked well, but this model works even better.
The suction is much improved, and this model cleans our rugs and carpet much better than its previous version. Battery life is excellent -- we have used this cleaner several times over the past few weeks and still have yet to recharge the battery (the instructions recommend recharging only after the battery runs down to maximize battery life). The cleaning solution is readily available at places like Target and inexpensive. It is easy to empty the collection chamber after cleaning.
If you want a simple, affordable, rechargeable, cordless spot carpet cleaner, this is the one to buy. If the SpotLifter 2X lasts even half as long as the one it replaces it will have been a very good investment. I would not hesitate to buy it again.

This one replaced our original spot lifter bought in 2002. The old model was a little smaller and had a little less suction. The new one now is bigger, heavier and has more suction, but it is not better.
First, the unit spits sucked up fluid from the motor air vents apparently sucking cleaning solution through the liquid trap in the canister and into the engine. This does not damage anything, but if you clean up house pet messes, you don't want some of that stuff come shooting out of the air vents, right?
Further, the canister is difficult to attach and you have to get it angled just right to snap into position. Oterhwise it will not go in.
It surprises me that Bissel has gone backwards in functionality of this great tool. The original unit we had was great, functioned great and none of the problems this new unit has. They are also clearly engineering or design flaws that were not present in the older model.

Length:: 1:32 Mins
Considering this Big Green is supposed to be a professional grade carpet cleaner, I expected it to be better than my trusty old Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900. The question really is whether or not the Big Green cleans so much better that it's worth the price.
I tested it on an old carpet remnant we've had sitting out in the garage for more than ten years. It has never been vacuumed nor steam cleaned until today. On the left of the screen is my new Big Green. The center is preserved for the "before" comparison. The right is my SteamVac. As you can see, there is an obvious difference in cleaning capabilities. I actually gave my SteamVac an extra whirl because it looked so dirty, but it still looks dirty compared to the Big Green side.
It's hard to tell from the video, but the dark color you see from the SteamVac side is not wetness. The darkness is actually a more muddied appearance, as if the SteamVac had added water to dirt.
I've owned quite a few carpet cleaners and I can say, this Big Green really is the best. Not just because it cleans carpets better. There are many other advantages:
1) The power cord is extra long. I can reach all up and down my long hallway in one stretch. My SteamVac requires me to plug and unplug.
2) The solution tank is extra large. It requires two capfuls of solution, but that will last a long time before needing to be refilled.
3) The collection tank is likewise huge.
4) The hose is long, with a wide head and good suction. It reaches almost up to the first landing of the stairway in my house.
5) Quick drying time.
Of course, there are a few drawbacks:
1) Even with the large solution and collection tanks empty, this thing is heavy. It requires me to push and pull with both hands -- a real workout. If you have a bad back, this may not be for you. Also, I'm not keen on carrying this upstairs.
2) There is no convenient storage for the hose.
SUMMARY AND OTHER THOUGHTS
I like my SteamVac. Until now, it was my favorite carpet cleaner, but it's no match for the Big Green.
I love Big Green. It's the best carpet cleaner I've ever had. My husband even noticed the cleaner carpets, and he's not one who'd normally care. If you really want clean carpets, buy this one.
P.S. If you're like me and just take the things out without checking all, there is a bottle of solution and some cardboard inside the collection tank. I cleaned my entire hallway and didn't know until I went to empty the tank. D'oh! No harm done, though.

My background:
3 children seven and under.
2 cats, 1 large dog.
1600 square feet (more or less) white carpets plus 200 square feet area rug.
Bissell carpet cleaner owner of 10 years ranging from smallest model to largest model
5th Bissell machine (3 currently still operating!)
This carpet cleaner is a serious tool for those who want to get the job done right, the first time. Some very nice improvements over Bissell's lower end machines are evident the moment you open the box. Some small drawbacks become evident after operating the machine. Here they are:
The Good:
Assembly- Simply pull the machine out of the box and open up the cleaning tanks to remove packing material (plus complimentary cleaning bottle) and you are ready to go within 15 minutes of delivery.
Build quality - This machine has a nice build. Not too heavy and not too light. Operating it feels almost like using a rowing motion vs the lower quality model with the single grip handle. Fold down handle allows for easier storage than other typical models.
Efficiency - This machine gets spots out within just a few passes. Carpets feel clean and drying time is extremely rapid (I would say about 3 hours with me running the ceiling fan and small space heater to aid the process) - no more soaking wet feet after trodging through cleaned rooms.
Cleaning Tank - Very large holding tank which combines solution and hot water. Less running up and down stairs with dirty water tanks to refill - which wastes a LOT of time. Very large and separate dirty water tank, easy to empty and clean. More sturdy feeling than Bissell's lower models. Much more appealing than the lower end models with their double bladder tanks, which tend to start to be hard to disinfect after cleaning up messes.
Hose attachment - Longer hose than other models, wider scrubbing head. Very efficient suction. Long hose allows easy cleaning of the stairs or other hard to reach areas.
Maneuverability - For being such a beast of a machine, it is actually only marginally more difficult to push than its lower cost counterpart.
Soap Dispensor - This machine lacks the soap dispenser and the selector knob (water, light traffic, heavy traffic) which after having owned 2 of the lower end models with a separate dispenser I see as a very big positive. Simply put 4 lid-cups of solution and go. Or learn to tinker around with the concentration to suit your needs. I use 4 cups for high traffic. 2 for light traffic and stains. The only drawback is once you prep the solution there is no way to change the concentration throughout the cleaning. I do not miss this ability at all.
The Drawbacks:
Cleaning Tank - Due to its larger size, this tank makes it impossible to scoot the Bissell underneath the sides of my beds. The machine is also a little big top heavy as a result of your increased capacity.
Maneuverability - While I have no issue, those with reduced strength or back issues may find this machine difficult to use for an extended period of time.
Hose attachment - The price you pay for a longer hose is a detachable hose (with nowhere on the machinery to hang it) which will require storage. Suggest getting a laundry bag to hang it up for storage since it is difficult to keep in check.
Power cord - Could have been longer. Also could have used a secondary wrap around point to keep it wound up better when not in use.
Conclusion - This is a serious carpet cleaner for those who have a lot of carpet to clean and don't want to run every 2 seconds to dump the bucket. It performs a bit better than its lower cost counterparts, but is not a miracle worker. My blue gatorade stain faded slightly and I expect it to continue to fade as I repeat applications with this higher end machine. Before recieving this item (thanks, Vine and Bissell again!) I had already used my Bissell 2X ProHeat to clean my entire house. After going through my home with this new Bissell the tanks still contained very dark grey water. Overall I am very pleased and know from experience that this machine will give me many years of service. If you don't have a serious NEED for this machine you will do very well with the ProHeat as it has served my family very well and my kids put these machines to the test weekly! If you have light colored carpets, or a large area of carpet then you will love this machine. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews

I had the older version of this machine. I bought it about 6 years ago and after attempting to clean the rugs last month I realized it was no longer picking up the water. Opened it up and saw that the internal suction hose had split in half. That was it .. time to find another cleaner. I have had good luck with Hoovers but did a TON of research before settling on this machine. I have a dog and a toddler and both do a number on my rugs. Juice, food, crayons, spit up, urine and everything else under the sun has ended up on my carpet in the past 2 years. I did not take care of my previous Hoover so it wasn't the best in its later life. I just brought the new one home and oh my god, the water was black. I did not think anything could bring my carpets back but this did. They are so soft and clean. I love this machine because it has a rinse button if you want to make sure you have gotten all the soap out. I use really warm water and the machine directs hot air onto the carpet as you make your passes. The carpet dried super fast and just looks fantastic. I had to fill and empty the containers 4 times for my combination living / dining room but hey, I'm not complaining now that I see the results. I also like this machine because you do not mix the detergent in with the water. This is great because if you have detergent left over you just pour it back into the bottle. Based on my previous experience, here is what I learned and can pass on to future Hoover SteamVac owners:
1. Clean your machine after each use. That means taking apart the brushes and washing out the front nozzle. This is an investment and if you want it to continue working like it did the first day, you need to take care of it.
2. Do not leave left over or dirty water in the tank when you put it away. This will wear away at the joints and increases the chances the leaks.
3. Do not leave left over detergent in the tank .. see 2.
4. Read the directions when you put it together and make sure you read how to use this rather than just take it out and turn it on. I never read the first manual and didn't realize I should have been cleaning and using the spray button a totally different way.
This is a great machine and I hope it will last just as if not longer now that I know how to take care of and use it properly.

I just got this carpet cleaner from Amazon.com and I am so happy with it. It outcleans everything I've ever used before, including professional cleaning companies. I owned a Kirby years ago and it can't hold a candle to this Hoover cleaner. I found it was much easier to use than the rug doctor, which I've rented many times, and since I own it, I don't have to haul it back to the store and I have all the time I want to clean my carpets.
It was very easy to use, and I particularly like the clean water rinse feature. It gets all the detergent residue out, and my carpet was soft and lofty after cleaning. Just think, you wouldn't wear your clothes washed and not rinsed.
The power is awesome, my carpet was practically dry when I finished. I got back very close to the amount of water that was dispensed. My carpet was dry enough to walk on in an hour and vacuum in 2 hours. This machine is so well made that I look forward to having soft clean carpet for years to come. It has the quality that I expected from a Hoover. I researched all brands of cleaners dilligently on the net and even looked at some brands, including Bissell, in a store before I decided on this particular Hoover machine. I've never been so happy while cleaning my carpets before. I had it out of the box and ready to go in minutes. It's as easy to use as a vacuum cleaner, plus, Amazon's sale price was cheaper than any price for the same machine that I found. I am a happy camper with this purchase!

Product Description

This powerful home steam vacuum saves you the expense and hassle of having to rent a steam cleaner to keep rugs, upholstery, and bare floors (other than hardwoods) looking like new. The powerful 12-amp motor combined with five spinning brushes that operate at either high or low speed lift the dirt and grime out of carpets. By pulling on the trigger in the comfortable upright handle, this deep cleaner releases the included carpet/upholstery cleaner and hot tap water.
For more stubborn stains or for high-traffic areas, this SteamVac also has a Clean Surge feature, which sends an extra blast of cleaning solution into the stain by simply pressing a button on the handle. When cleaning is complete, release the trigger and the SteamVac forces hot air into the cleaning path so you can do a few dry strokes over the stain. This deep cleaner has two separate water tanks to keep clean water apart from dirty water. The top tank holds the detergent and one gallon of hot water and automatically mixes the two so you don’t need to get your hands wet. The lower tank holds the dirty solution picked up from the carpet and unlatches to easily pour out into a sink without spilling. For cleaning stairs or upholstery, this deep cleaner has a long 8-foot hose and a special stair/upholstery nozzle to scrub out spots. Other features of this deep cleaner include a brush indicator, which informs you that the brushes are spinning; an on/off foot pedal; a handle release pedal; and a 20-inch wraparound cord. The Hoover SteamVac is covered by a full one-year warranty.

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900

Customer Reviews

If your new machine LEAKS, see note 2 below. I am just amazed at how many people write that their machine leaked from day one, and they returned it. It will leak if you skip a crucial one-time set-up step.
Paid $170 at Best Buy. This is my first carpet cleaner so I have nothing to compare it to except my own expectations. Even though the name is SteamVac, like all the others in this class of cleaners, there is no Steam to it. That's just false marketing, but all the manufacturers do it, so no particular knock on Hoover.
First, let me say I'm ashamed to admit that our carpet hadn't been cleaned in 4 years, and that we live in the country where lots of dirt gets tracked in from outside. So the carpet was pretty darn dirty. The Hoover F5914-900 did a very nice job the first time I used it - a drastically noticeable difference in the appearance of the carpet. The water in the dirty water receptacle was black. Did it return the carpet to new condition? No, impossible. Did it take another treatment or two to really get it clean? Yes, that is the price I pay for ignoring wet-cleaning the carpet for years. One of this cleaner's best features is the ability to dry the carpet quite thoroughly. Since the front of the machine is made of clear plastic, you can see when you're vacuuming up water. If you want to dry the carpet as much as possible, keep vacuuming until you no longer see water being pulled up. As time has passed, the SteamVac has done an excellent job of maintaining my carpets.
My only gripe is that the dirty water container fills up too quickly and should be a little bigger. Ideally, the dirty water receptacle "should" be full right as you run out of clean water. Then, you shut down, empty the dirty water, refill the clean water and back to work. But this process gets out-of-sync with the dirty water receptacle filling up before you run out of clean water. So this can be a little inconvenient, but not a show-stopper.
The machine is well constructed but it IS plastic, with lots of compartments and latches and hose holders, etc, so one must simply be careful or those things will no doubt break off.
A few other notes:
1. If you are not the type to read manuals, do read this one. Assembly and operation are easy if you sit down and read the manual through before starting. It's not like a vacuum cleaner where you just plug it in and go.
2. My machine leaked badly BUT it was my own fault. There is a one-time only setup procedure where you squeeze the trigger and push the Clean-Surge button to lock a rod into place. Push the Clean-Surge button firmly. There may be a loud SNAP which sounds like you broke something, but you didn't. Until you get that snap, the Clean-Surge (which releases extra water-cleaner solution) is on all the time, hence the leaking. I didn't push the button hard enough initially, so I had the leak problem.
EDIT December 2007
Apparently many people are assuming that without a loud snap, the Clean Surge will not work. All that matters is that your machine doesn't leak. If your SteamVac doesn't leak, it is assembled properly and the Clean Surge will work! The only reason I emphasized the "snap" was because so many people were having leak problems, which are easily solved. And it's possible that Hoover has changed the design after getting so many returns from people who didn't read the instructions in the manual. So don't get hung up on the snap. If your machine does leak after assembly, you know what to do.
3. ANY time it seems like there is no suction, the problem is that something is not seated properly. It is easy to snap the lid onto the dirty water container without lining it up properly, which causes a vacuum leak. If there is a vacuum leak, there is no suction at the bottom of the machine, where it is needed to suck up water from the carpet. Plus you'll see that the brushes aren't turning, as they're driven by vacuum. So recheck the dirty water lid. Carefully line up the hinges at the back. The front should snap closed very easily. If you have to force it a little to snap it closed, it means the back is not aligned properly and you'll get no suction.
4. If you have velvet or velvetine furniture, do NOT use the powered tool, use the utility tool. The powered tool is too strong for delicate fabric.
5. Like others have suggested, find a cheap alternative to the Hoover brand carpet detergent. One gallon of water doesn't clean a lot of carpet, and at 5 oz of soap per gallon, you go thru it fast.
6. Always be sure to dry vacuum your carpet with a regular vacuum cleaner first before using this machine to wash it. Be sure to remove and clean the brushes when you're done using this machine. Otherwise hair, thread, and balled up carpet fibers will dry on them and between them. Then the brushes won't turn. These are not "use and put away" machines like vacuum cleaners, they're "use, clean, and put away".
7. Here's something I do which you might want to try. For a very dirty carpet, I fill a cheap plastic 2 gallon watering can (or smaller for a smaller carpet) with hot water and a tablespoon or 2 of Oxy Clean. I then sprinkle the carpet heavily, being careful not to soak it. Then use the Hoover normally. Of course, this fills up the waste water receptacle long before the soapy water container is empty, but it still saves trips to the sink to load up on clean, soapy water.
8. Others have suggested using boiling water. Not for me, thanks. Too dangerous to handle and unnecessary, unless you've spilled or tracked in grease.
After reading countless reviews here, I have concluded that the problems people have encountered are from failing to properly set up the machine initially, failing to seat the dirty water lid properly, or failing to clean the machine after use. I recommend this Hoover. It won't perform miracles, but I think if it is not abused it will last a long time and do an excellent job of maintaining a carpet.

The F5914 really cleans carpets well. On my worst carpet area, the cleaner did as well as a commercial carpet cleaner. I recommend the following to make it a successful cleaning:
1) I supplement the hot water with some boiling water to really get the temperature up. By the time the water hits the spray nozzle, it has really cooled off so make it hotter. Bissell uses a heater, but it can't be that powerful without reducing motor power. Best to supplement.
2) Patience. Go slow and go over really bad areas. You will HAVE to pretreat and hand wash heavy stains, but so do the pros. Don't expect a diamond out of coal. You still have to do the work.
3) Clean often. I have one carpet that I waited way too long and it just won't come clean. The pros can't and I can't. BIG lesson learned there.
Have fun with this. I can't believe how much dirt there was in my "clean" areas, so it will be great to have this around to clean when I desire to. I saved more than the price of the cleaner this weekend.
